Here is a list of frequently asked questions. If you have any other questions, please call 808-224-9241 or send email to info@hawaiidroneimaging.com

  • Is Hawaii Drone Imaging certified?

Yes. In order to operate drones for commercial purposes, drone operators must be certified by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). All our pilots hold a remote pilot airman certificate.

  • Is Hawaii Drone Imaging insured?

Yes. We carry an aeronautical insurance policy which covers people and property during our operations.

  • Wind and rain?

We do not fly in high winds and rain. Our advanced camera gimbal system gives very smooth shots in winds of up to about 15 mph.

  • What if we have bad weather on the day?

We will discuss about the weather policy prior to each booking, and the project-specific policy will be written on the agreement.

  • Can you fly the Drone commercially anywhere?

Not anywhere. There are a lot of restrictions where we can operate drones. For example, no drones are allowed within 5 miles from airports without a special approval from the Airport Traffic Control, not at National/State/City parks, etc. We would be very happy to talk to you in details about many other restrictions.

  • How high and far the drone can fly?

Altitude of up to 400 ft, and drones must be at a visual line of site all time.

  • How long can you fly?

The maximum flight time on a single battery in normal conditions is between 17 and 24 minutes, depending on which equipment we use for your event, and depending on the weather. On average we fly up to 19 minutes before landing and changing batteries.

We carry spare pre-charged batteries on each shoot. It only takes a few minutes to change the battery and get back in air. So we are able to fly for a long time with little disruption.

  • Can you fly indoors?

Yes. We can fly indoors but we need space. We have flown in warehouses and studios. We can also install propeller guards for indoor flights for safety.

Our drones are battery powered with electric motors so there is no worry about polluting the environment. The dynamics of flying indoors are different. The construction and materials in the building can affect how drones fly.

  • Are drones better than helicopters?

They get different aerial footage and results. Some advantages of drones are that they can fly closer to the subject, they are quieter, can be deployed quicker as weather and filming dictates, and they are a fraction of the cost of hiring a helicopter and pilot.

  • I’m a real estate agent. Can I take pictures with my drone and use them for my listings?

Only if you are certified as a commercial remote pilot by the FAA. If you are not, it is illegal to use any drone-obtained materials for business purposes through any ways including MLS, website, social media, brochure, etc.

  • I’m a drone hobbyist. Can I use my photos and videos for commercial use?

No, you cannot. You must be certified by the FAA as a commercial remote pilot to use any drone-obtained materials for commercial purposes. Also, the drone-obtained materials become retroactively commercial if it is ever sold or used for commercial purposes.

  • Should I hire a drone service for my wedding?

Absolutely! We at Hawaii Drone Imaging believe that aerial photos and videos are MUST for a unique wedding. We would be more than happy to work with your ground photographer/videographer. Please keep in mind that drones can make some noise and can be disruptive near ground. We can discuss with the wedding couple in advance, and we can suggest the best time and way to use drones during your event.
